The Echoes
Sometimes growth sounds a lot like silence.
This morning I stood in the kitchen a little longer than I needed to.
Coffee was made.
The dog was asleep.
Someone had left a cup on the counter.
The dishwasher needed unloaded.
Normal things.
Ordinary things.
But I found myself just standing there for a minute, looking around at a life that feels different than it did not so long ago.
For years, every part of this house seemed to revolve around the kids.
Someone needed a ride.
Someone needed help with school.
Someone needed a snack.
Someone needed me.
The days were loud and busy and exhausting, and if I’m honest, there were times I wondered if I would ever have a moment to myself again.
Now all three of them drive.
They make plans without me.
They come and go.
They’re building lives that don’t require me standing in the middle of every single moment.
And that is exactly what I wanted.
So why does it feel so strange?
I think because nobody really talks about this part.
The part where the work worked.
The part where all those years of raising children quietly begin showing up in the distance.
The part where you realize your job was never to keep them close forever.
It was to help them leave.
Not leave your life.
Just leave your orbit a little.
To become their own people.
To carry pieces of home with them into places you’ve never been.
I don’t think the house is getting emptier.
I think it’s getting bigger.
The walls haven’t moved, but somehow there is more space than there used to be.
More room for who they’re becoming.
More room for who I’m becoming too.
And some days that feels exciting.
Some days it feels heartbreaking.
Most days it feels like both.
Maybe that’s what this season is.
Not an ending.
Just the sound of love echoing into places it was always meant to reach.

It's such a lovely way to see that the "season" of your life, as it currently is, is a part of the bigger cyclce of life. So, you gather the precious moments to you, because you know that you will treasure them, no matter how small or silent, when you have moved on into your next season, or as your children move on into theirs.
The idea that the house isn’t getting emptier, just bigger, feels very true.
