I'm a bit further ahead than you are. My hubby and I are in a totally different situation with both of us on long term disability since 2019 - so we've been home now together for awhile, even while not being retired. It's a kind of weird place to be.
But one of the best advice we were given when our kids were small, when it's super easy to get caught up in all things kids, was to prioritize our marriage. The divorce rate for couples is highest when you become empty nesters, because you end up drifting apart without even realizing it and then realize that you don't know who you are married to anymore.
We took that advice to heart and made time for dates and get aways when we could. We put each other first, and that's the advice I'd offer to any couple with kids still at home.
We've been married for 31 years and the best years are right now.
