The Next Chapter
Stepping forward with gratitude, hope and an open heart
Tomorrow I start a new job.
I’ve been saying those words for days now.
To friends.
To family.
To myself.
And every time I say them, people assume the nerves are about the job.
The training.
The new people.
The unfamiliar routines.
Those things are part of it, I suppose.
But the truth is, what I’m feeling tonight runs deeper than that.
Because tomorrow isn’t just about work.
It’s about change.
The kind that arrives so slowly you barely notice it until one day you’re standing in your kitchen looking around your life and realizing you’ve crossed into a new season.
For nearly twenty years, my days revolved around raising children.
Not in the poetic way people talk about motherhood.
In a practical way.
The everyday way, packed lunches, school forms, rides, appointments, and reminders.
The endless stream of little things that somehow become a life.
And then one day, without fanfare or warning, life begins to shift.
My two sons are adults now.
Chloe just turned sixteen.
All three of my children drive.
I keep coming back to that fact because it feels impossible.
There was a time when three car seats occupied my world.
Now three sets of keys do.
I don’t know exactly when the transition happened.
I only know I looked up one day and realized the season I had been living in for twenty years was quietly changing shape.
They still need me.
Of course they do.
But differently now.
Less for permission. More for perspective.
Less for rides. More for reassurance.
Less for answers. More for understanding.
And it isn’t only motherhood that is changing.
Marriage changes, too.
Not all at once.
Not dramatically.
Just little shifts that happen over the years until one day you realize you’re having different conversations than you used to.
Asking different questions.
Imagining a different future.
My husband and I have spent years focused on raising children, paying bills, surviving hard seasons, navigating health scares, and doing all the things life asks of people who build a life together.
And lately, it feels as though we’re standing in a doorway too.
Looking at each other and asking what comes next.
Not because the story is ending.
Because a new chapter is beginning.
There is something both beautiful and unsettling about realizing that even after all these years, a marriage can continue becoming.
That the people who said “I do” are not the same people standing here today.
Life has shaped us. Time has shaped us. Love has shaped us.
And now we find ourselves learning each other again in ways we never expected.
At the same time, my writing has grown into something I never saw coming.
Words that once lived quietly inside notebooks now travel out into the world.
Conversations have appeared where silence used to be.
Connections have appeared where loneliness once lived.
The woman writing these words is not quite the same woman she was even a year ago.
And perhaps that is what all of this is really about.
Not work.
Not driving children.
Not marriage.
Not writing.
Transformation.
The quiet kind.
The kind that doesn’t arrive with fireworks or announcements.
The kind that happens while you’re making dinner, folding laundry, answering texts, and living an ordinary life.
Until one day you stop and notice that almost everything around you has changed.
Tomorrow I will walk through a new door.
But the truth is, I have been walking through new doors for a while now.
The job is simply the first one with a schedule attached to it.
Today I am nervous.
And excited.
And grateful.
Not because I know exactly what comes next.
But because I am beginning to trust that not every season of change arrives to take something away.
Sometimes it arrives to make room for something new.
And standing here today, on the edge of a chapter I cannot fully see yet, that feels like enough.

A Quiet Saga

Amazing! Congratulations on the new job! I so resonated with this! I'm in the same boat! I decided to begin writing a book. But, the changes were intense and I had a hard time riding the wave for sure! But, I seem to have found a sort of rhythm and I'm not hating it! LOL! I pray you have an amazing first day! 😃
Amy, the sentence that lingered with me was, “The job is simply the first one with a schedule attached to it.” That line reframes the entire piece because it reveals that the real transition began long before tomorrow. Your reflection honors something many people experience but struggle to name: the realization that change often arrives quietly, through accumulated moments rather than singular events. I was especially moved by your description of children needing us differently and marriage continuing to become, because both speak to the courage required to embrace relationships as living things rather than fixed destinations. Thank you for sharing a reflection that treats change not as a disruption to life, but as evidence that life is still unfolding.
